Pollution rate in Nigeria has undoubtedly been on the rise for over 3 decades. Pollution is introduction into the environment of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects.
Pollution is carried out in several ways and forms in Nigeria, which can pose a big threat to the wellbeing of people around such environment.
Elementary studies has always hinted at the major 3 types of pollution which includes the land, air and water pollution.
Others may include light, noise/sound and so on.
The major 4 I will highlight are;
- Land Pollution
- Water Pollution
- Air Pollution
- Noise Pollution
The land pollution seems to be the commonest especially for the land logged areas of the country. This is often done knowingly or unknowingly as there seem to be no laws or self consciousness guiding against such act.
These includes; indiscriminate refuse dumping at unauthorized places, open defecation, peeing at open places.
Most times these actions above go a long way by messing the streets up especially when some objects that are not decomposites are dumped, and then when rain falls they all gather to block drainages and also litter places that shouldn’t be.
Water pollution comes next, as it is also a common form of pollution whereby foreign bodies that are harmful to water bodies and it’s inhabitants are deposited or exposed to the aquatic environment.
This atimes can come as a result of dirts that flowed into the water bodies and then flow ahead to block water ways, some might be poisonous to the aquatic organisms. Some arise from mining activities like, crude oil spillage, gas flaring and many more.
The last forms of pollution I listed which are the air and noise pollution will be discussed together here.
Air pollution is also a common practice especially from faulty cars, open burning of substances, or exposure of gaseous substances to the atmosphere, while noise pollution is when loud pitch of noise are being let out to public places.
Pollution as a whole in any form is unwarranted and shouldn’t be condoned because they can be hazardous to the inhabitants, however it can be controlled or checked if the following things are being put in place;
- There should be laws to keep people in check against such act.
- Orientation and awareness should be given to people on the right way to dispose refuse and handle agents of pollution
Finally we should all be conscious and take measures to keep our society in check and protect the environment from climatic changes and effects
